Ballarat has a lot of beautiful older homes weatherboards, Victorian-era cottages, post-war brick veneers and a lot of them are still running on wiring that's decades old. Rewiring isn't usually urgent overnight, but ignoring the warning signs for too long can turn into a safety issue.
1. Lights that flicker or dim for no reason
Occasional flickering when a big appliance kicks in (like an air conditioner starting up) can be normal. But lights that flicker regularly, dim when you turn on unrelated appliances, or flicker across the whole house point to a loose connection or a circuit under strain.
2. Warm or discoloured power points and switches
A power point or light switch that feels warm to the touch, has a slight burning smell, or shows browning/scorch marks around the socket is a genuine warning sign not just cosmetic wear. This means heat is building up somewhere it shouldn't, usually from a loose or overloaded connection.
3. A persistent burning or hot plastic smell
This one's straightforward: if you smell something like hot plastic or burning dust near an outlet, switch, or the switchboard itself, treat it seriously. Switch off the circuit if you can safely do so and get an electrician out.
4. Safety switch trips that keep happening
We cover this in more detail in our safety switch article, but frequent, unexplained trips especially across an older property are often a sign that ageing insulation is breaking down somewhere in the wiring.
5. Fabric-insulated or "VIR" cabling
If your home hasn't been rewired since it was built and it's pre-1980s, there's a good chance some circuits still use old fabric or rubber-insulated cabling. This insulation becomes brittle with age and can crack or crumble, exposing bare wire. It's one of the clearest indicators an electrician will look for during an inspection.
What to do next
Noticing one of these signs doesn't necessarily mean a full rewire is needed sometimes it's a specific circuit or a switchboard upgrade that solves the problem. The safest approach is a proper inspection so you know exactly what you're dealing with, rather than guessing or waiting for something to fail.
