"How much will it cost?" is the first thing most people ask when they call an electrician, and it's a fair question. A lot of trades won't put a number on their website. We do, because we think Ballarat homeowners deserve to know roughly what they're up for before they pick up the phone.
Typical electrician prices in Ballarat
These are our own starting prices. Your final price depends on your home, but these give you a realistic starting point:
- Call-out and standard job: from $88 + GST. Covers a licensed electrician attending, diagnosing and handling a standard small job. See residential electrical.
- Fault finding: from $88 + GST call-out. Tripping safety switches, flickering lights, dead power points. See fault finding & repairs.
- Switchboard upgrade: from $980 + GST for a standard upgrade from old fuses to circuit breakers and safety switches. See switchboard upgrades.
- EV charger installation: from $880 + GST install only (you supply the charger). See EV charger installation.
- Split system air conditioning: from $1,499 + GST for a 2.5kW unit supplied and installed on a standard back-to-back job. See split system air con.
- Commercial work: from $176 + GST. See commercial electrical.
What makes an electrical job cost more?
- The age of the home. Ballarat has a lot of older weatherboard and brick homes. Old wiring and ceramic fuse boards can mean extra work to bring things up to the current standard.
- Access. Low roof spaces, no underfloor access or double-brick walls take longer to run cable through.
- Distance from the switchboard. A new circuit for an EV charger or air con on the far side of the house needs a longer cable run.
- Extra safety work. If we find something unsafe, like no safety switch protecting a circuit, we'll tell you and quote it separately. We never just add it to the bill.
How to keep the cost down
The easiest saving is to bundle jobs. If you're getting a split system put in, it's the perfect time to add a power point, swap old downlights for LEDs or upgrade the switchboard, because you only pay for one call-out. Sending photos with your online quote request helps us price the job accurately before we arrive.
Cheap vs. licensed: what you should always get
Whoever you use, make sure they're a registered electrical contractor and that you get a Certificate of Electrical Safety for prescribed work. It's a legal requirement in Victoria, and Energy Safe Victoria lets you check a contractor's registration. We're REC 28054, and every job comes with a certificate.
Can I pay it off?
Yes. We're a Zip Finance merchant, so you can spread the cost of bigger jobs over weekly, fortnightly or monthly repayments.
