EV charger installs are one of our fastest-growing jobs in Ballarat, and most homeowners are surprised by how straightforward the process actually is once it's scheduled in.
What's actually involved
A home EV charger installation isn't just mounting a box on the wall it's a dedicated electrical circuit run from your switchboard to the charger location, sized correctly for the charger's power output, with its own safety switch and, in most cases, a compliant isolation point.
How long it typically takes
For most homes, the physical installation takes half a day to a full day. The time depends mainly on:
- Distance from the switchboard a charger mounted right next to the switchboard is much quicker than one on the opposite side of the house or a detached garage.
- Switchboard capacity if your board needs upgrading to safely handle the extra load, that adds time (and is often worth doing at the same time see our switchboard upgrade article).
- Cable routing underground, through a roof space, or along an external wall all take different amounts of time and affect the finish.
- Charger type a basic single-phase charger is generally quicker to install than a higher-powered three-phase unit.
Do you need to upgrade your switchboard first?
Not always, but it's worth checking. Older switchboards, especially ones without safety switches already fitted, sometimes need attention before an EV circuit can be added safely. We check this as part of the initial quote so there are no surprises on installation day.
What we handle on the day
- Assessing the best cable route and charger position
- Running and connecting the dedicated circuit
- Installing the charger and testing the full connection
- Issuing your Certificate of Electrical Safety
Planning ahead
If you're building, renovating, or planning to buy an EV in the next year or two, it's worth getting the circuit run now while walls or ceilings are already open it's a much smaller job to do in advance than to retrofit later. We install all major EV charger brands and can talk you through what suits your car and your home.
